Keni Burke - Changes 1982

Keni Burke - Changes 1982
Kenneth M. Burke [Born:] September 28, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois), better known as Keni Burke, is an American R&B, soul, funk, and jazz singer, songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist who began his career as a member of the 1970s soul outfit, the Five Stairsteps. As a member of the Five Stairsteps, Burke wrote the group's first minor hit "You Waited Too Long" in 1966, but the group would see their biggest success with the million-selling song "O-o-h Child" in 1970.

The group went on to sign with George Harrison's Dark Horse Records in 1975, and had their next hit with the Burke-penned "From Us to You", from their 1976 album 2nd Resurrection. The group disbanded soon after. In 1981, Changes, Burke's best-selling album to date, was released, containing the singles "Hang Tight" and his signature hit "Rising to the Top'' - a big success in Chicago.

The song has become a popular sampling choice for hip hop artists, having been borrowed by artists such as Doug E Fresh ("Keep Risin To The Top"), Big Daddy Kane ("Smooth Operator"), LL Cool J ("Around the Way Girl"), Pete Rock & CL Smooth ("Take You There"), Mary J. Blige ("Love No Limit"), O.C. ("Born 2 Live") and once again by LL Cool J for the song "Paradise", with Amerie, though a lot of these songs have been mistakenly thought to use the bass line from the 1983 song "All Night Long" by the Mary Jane Girls.

In 2006, "Rising to The Top" appeared in the soundtrack for the popular video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, on fictional Quiet Storm station Vice City For Lovers. Burke's next release was the 1982 self-produced You're the Best.

Kid Creole & The Coconuts - Tropical Gangsters 1982

Kid Creole and the Coconuts is an American musical group created and led by August Darnell. Its music incorporates a variety of styles and influences, in particular "American and Latin American, South American, Caribbean, Trinidadian, Calloway" and conceptually inspired by the big band era. The Coconuts are a glamorous trio of female backing vocalists whose lineup has changed throughout the years.

Thomas August Darnell Browder was born in The Bronx, New York City, USA on August 12, 1950, his mother was from South Carolina and his father from Savannah, Georgia. As an adult, Thomas Browder began going by his two middle names as August Darnell.

Growing up in the melting pot of the Bronx, Darnell was exposed early on to all kinds of music". Darnell began his musical career in a band named The In-Laws with his brother, Stony Browder Jr, in 1965, which disbanded so Darnell could pursue a career as an English teacher. Darnell obtained a masters degree in English, but in 1974 again formed a band with his brother Stony Browder Jr under the name Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band.

Their self-titled debut release was a Top 40-charting album which was certified gold and was nominated for a Grammy. Together, the Browder boys defied convention to invent a new breed of music. Of convoluted and deliberately obfuscated racial heritage, the brothers decided to promote their pan-genetic Creole Creed: a better, brighter reality that ignores gender and colour restrictions.

Darnell began producing for other artists, such as Don Armando’s Second Avenue Rhumba Band and Gichy Dan’s Beachwood No.9, before adopting the name Kid Creole (adapted from the Elvis Presley film King Creole) in 1980. The persona of Kid Creole is described as:

“ Inspired by Cab Calloway and the Hollywood films of the 30s and 40s, the Kid fills out his colorful zoot suits with style and grace, dancing onstage with his inimitable, relentless and self-proclaimed cool. ”

Jonathan Butler [Born:] October 10, 1961, Athlone, Cape Town, South Africa) is a singer-songwriter and guitarist. His music is often classified as R&B, jazz fusion or worship music. Born and raised in Cape Town during Apartheid, Butler started singing and playing acoustic guitar as a child. Racial segregation and poverty during Apartheid has been the subject of many of his records.

In 1978 he found the inspiration and encouragement to begin expressing himself as a composer and songwriter when he joined Cape Town's best known jazz/rock outfit, Pacific Express.

Two albums were recorded with the Express personnel, and some Pacific Express songs were later released on the 1988 7th Avenue album. All three releases were issued by Mountain Records. Butler was signed to Jive Records in 1977, and in the early 1980s he moved to the United Kingdom where he remained for seventeen years. Jeffrey Osborne - Jeffrey Osborne 1982

Jeffrey Osborne - Jeffrey Osborne 1982
[Born:] March 9, 1948, in Providence, RI; father's name Clarence "Legs" Osborne; married to Sheri; children: Tiffany, Dawn, and Jeanine.

The 1980s were a golden age of African American vocal artistry, sandwiched between the disco-dominated 1970s and the spoken-word hip-hop experimentation of the 1990s. From car radios and concert stages everywhere bloomed big, romantic voices, well schooled in both singing technique and pure romantic appeal. One of the best-selling recording artists among the crop of 1980s balladeers was Jeffrey Osborne, who notched five gold or platinum albums with sales of over 500,000 units each.

Osborne was born on March 9, 1948, in Providence, Rhode Island. More than those of most other artists, his was an upbringing steeped in musical traditions, and several of his siblings also went on to make music professionally. Osborne's father, Clarence "Legs" Osborne, was a big-band trumpeter who played with the Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Lionel Hampton bands. He could have had an even more distinguished career had he not opted to spend more time with his family. Clarence Osborne died when Jeffrey was 13-years-old.

After his father's death, Osborne switched from trumpet to drums, and two years later, he kept the family musical tradition alive by moving to Los Angeles in search of a musical career. He had the blessing of his mother, who was a descendant of the Native American Pequot tribe. She had always nurtured his musical side, encouraging him to perform renditions of Johnny Mathis songs at parties while he was still a youngster.

Before he ever sang professionally, Osborne was a drummer. Not long after arriving in Los Angeles, he landed a guest slot on drums for a live performance with the soon-to-be-famous soul group the O'Jays, and ended up performing with the band for two weeks. That brush with musical greatness kept Osborne going through several years of musical apprenticeship.

Back home in Providence in 1969, he went to a performance by a group called Love Men Ltd. that was in sudden need of a drummer--their usual drummer was arrested for fighting with an audience member during the show's intermission. Osborne filled in, was signed to a contract, and went back to Los Angeles with the band, where they altered their name to LTD. They explained to their female fans that the initials stood for Love, Togetherness, and Devotion.

Bookings for the band were lean at first, as LTD served as the backup group for a female impersonator. However, several members of LTD were southern soul veterans who had backed the 1960s soul duo Sam & Dave on horns and had an ear for potential vocal power. The rich tenor voice of their new drummer impressed them, and Osborne was encouraged to take vocal solos with LTD.

Finally, Osborne became the group's lead vocalist. He stayed with LTD for 11 years, contributing vocals to six hit albums and to such individual song successes as "Love Ballad" (1976) and "(Every Time I Turn Around) Back in Love Again" (1977). Although the latter was a bigger hit originally, "Love Ballad" became a signature tune for Osborne, and he was still singing it in concerts a quarter of a century later.

LTD experienced some crossover success in addition to its stellar performance on African American pop charts. Toward the end of the 1970s, buoyed by session work for such artists as Smokey Robinson, Osborne began to consider a solo career.

In contrast to the straight R&B inclinations of his bandmates, Osborne wanted to move in the direction of a more pop-oriented style He chose as a producer the jazz-pop keyboard player George Duke, whose work was perfectly suited to, and indeed formed much of the musical basis for, the romantic "Quiet Storm" style of the early 1980s. Osborne could not have made a better choice, for Duke provided him with low-key but sophisticated backing that showcased his smoothly soaring vocals to maximum advantage.

Osborne's debut solo album, Jeffrey Osborne, was released on the A&M label in 1982, in the midst of strong competition from similarly-styled vocal powerhouses such as Luther Vandross and Teddy Pendergrass. It yielded three hit singles, of which one, the wedding-ready "On the Wings of Love," cracked the pop top 30 and also became an international hit. His next three album releases-- Stay with Me Tonight, (1983) Don't Stop, (1984) and Emotional, (1986)-- likewise offered radio-ready material and sold well. Osborne placed nine singles in the top three positions of Billboard's R&B chart, with several crossing over to pop as well.

A multi-talented musician, Osborne wrote or co-wrote many of his hits. He also began to branch out into production, co-producing his 1988 album release One Love--One Dream. That disc yielded the biggest R&B hit of his career, "She's on the Left." His highest pop chart performances came with "You Should Be Mine (The Woo Woo Song)," from Emotional, and with a 1987 duet with Dionne Warwick, "Love Power." That song, composed by legendary pop tunesmith Burt Bacharach, offered Osborne a chance to demonstrate his interpretive skills, which stacked up well against those of veteran pop vocalist Warwick.

For a variety of reasons, Osborne's career faltered after the release of One Love--One Dream. Jumping into other endeavors such as producing albums for other artists, he took two years to release a follow-up, Only Human. For that album he moved to a new label, Arista, which backed Osborne with high-tech accompaniments less suited to his style. "In pushing Osborne into a livelier dance vein," noted People reviewer David Hiltbrand, "[Arista head Clive] Davis has handed this booming balladeer some bum steers." The ultimate cause of Osborne's decline may simply have been a change in musical tastes--African American music of the 1990s had a harder edge than the music of Osborne's prime years.

The title track of Only Human reached number three on the R&B charts, giving Osborne what may remain his last top ten hit. Osborne left Arista in 1994, and did not cut another album until the Modern label holiday release Something Warm for Christmas in 1997. In 1999 he signed with the Private label, which also was working to resuscitate the careers of one-time romantic icons Barry White, Peabo Bryson, and James Ingram. His first album for the label, That's for Sure, was released in 2000. Produced and largely composed by Osborne himself, the album included a live version of "Love Ballad" as well as new music.

Jeff Lorber - Step By Step 1985

Jeff Lorber - Step By Step 1985
[Born:] 4th November, 1952, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Jeff Lorber was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. He took piano lessons from the age of four, and upon leaving high school studied at the Berklee School Of Music. As a teenager Jeff performed with a variety of local R & B bands.

In 1972 he moved to Portland, Oregon, and formed the Jeff Lorber Fusion, an instrumental jazz funk ensemble which included Kenny G on sax. In 1975 the group signed with Inner City Records and released a debut album 'The Jeff Lorber Fusion'.

This was followed by 'Soft Space' (1978) before the group switched to Arista for 'Water Sign' (1979). Further Jeff Lorber Fusion albums followed including 'Wizard Island' (1980) and 'Galaxian' (1981), his first with vocal tracks.

As a solo artist Jeff recorded for Arista 'It's A Fact' (1982), including 'Always There'; 'In The Heat Of The Night' (1984); and 'Step By Step' (1985), including 'Best Part Of The Night' featuring Gavin Christopher, 'Step By Step' produced by The System featuring Audrey Wheeler and 'Every Woman Needs It' featuring James Robinson, which was released in the U.K. by Club Records (via Phonogram).

By now, following the break-up of his marriage, Jeff had moved to Los Angeles where in 1986 he switched to Warner Brothers for 'Private Passion', including 'Facts Of Love' featuring Karyn White (again released by Club Records in the U K). From here Jeff moved into session work both as a pianist and producer.

Over the years he has worked with numerous artists including Marlon McClain ('Changes' 1981), Kenny G (Kenny G), The Commodores ('Nightshift'), The Dazz Band, Debarge, The Fit, Pleasure, Eugene Wilde, Miki Howard and Jody Watley ('Real Love'). Jeff did not issue his first proper solo LP until 1991's 'Worth Waiting For', remaining both a prolific performer and producer for the rest of the decade.

In 2001, he released 'Kickin' It', which featured a version of the Crusaders 'Keep That Same Old Feelin'. He toured the U.K. later that year, featuring dates at London's Jazz Cafe.

Jeannie Reynolds - One Wish 1977

Jeannie Reynolds - One Wish 1977
Jeannie Reynolds, best known for 'The Fruit Song' was the sister of L.J. Reynolds of The Dramatics. Though 'The Fruit Song' is her signature song, her highest charting single was the snappy 'The Phone's Been Jumping All Day' on Casablanca Records, which went to Number 10 R&B on Billboard's R & B chart in summer 1975.

Reynolds was actually cutting singles back in 1969 with 'Down On Me, Don't Set Me Free'. Following this release 1971 saw 'I Don't Mess Around, People Make The World' and then in 1974 came 'I Know He'll Be Back Someday, You Ain't The Only Man'.

Her only other R & B charting single was its follow up,'Lay Some Lovin' On Me,' Number 46 R & B, fall 1975. With its 'fruitful' cover, the singer's LP, 'Cherries, Bananas And Other Fine Things' on Casablanca was issued in June 1976 and charted Number 59R&B that fall.

One single from the LP, 'The Fruit Song', written by Lawrence Payton of The Four Tops and Fred Bridges, became a huge disco hit,a post-release collectible and a steppers standard.
Another Casablanca LP, 'One Wish' was produced by Don Davis (Johnnie Taylor, The Dramatics, Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis,Jr.). One release followed in 1978 entitled 'I'm Hooked On You'.

'The Fruit Song' can be found on Classic Mellow, Vol. 1 on BMG - Mastercuts.

Tragically, Jeannie Reynolds took her two children's lives before committing suicide in 1980. The sad event was, apparently, drug related.

Albums:

1. Cherries, Banana's & Other Fine Things (Casablanca 1976)
2. One Wish (Casablanca 1977)
